marnanightingale: (OMIT NEEDLESS WORDS)
But

this made me laugh really, really hard.

(Note re icon: I have a vexed relationship with Strunk and White. On the one hand, I wouldn't give up my illustrated S&W for a Really Big Clock, because [livejournal.com profile] fairestcat gave it to me and I loff it madly; on the other hand, I don't actually do what it says most of the time. (My poor martyred [livejournal.com profile] fairestcat, Best Editor Ever, is probably muttering that I don't do what ANYONE says when it comes to writing and she is not wrong). I sort of keep it around for its value in occasionally helping me sort out, when I know a thing has gone wrong, WHERE exactly said wrongness has come from. But anyway.)

Also, when one is hungry on a cold and snowy day and too lazy to cook for just one person, a chopped green onion and a handful of broccoli added to a can of chicken noodle soup while it heats, the results eaten with Ryvita, Camembert, an apple, and a cup of coffee makes for a fast and tasty restorative that is probably on the whole fairly nourishing.

*is a little ashamed, but well-fed*.

Yes. That.

marnanightingale: (racism sensibilities)
Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] omnivorously, who ganked it from [livejournal.com profile] vejiicakes:

“We have now reached the point where every goon with a grievance, every bitter bigot, merely has to place the prefix, ‘I know this is not politically correct, but…’ in front of the usual string of insults in order to be not just safe from criticism, but actually a card, a lad, even a hero. Conversely, to talk about poverty and inequality, to draw attention to the reality that discrimination and injustice are still facts of life, is to commit the sin of political correctness. Anti-PC has become the latest cover for creeps. It is a godsend for every curmudgeon and crank, from fascists to the merely smug.”

Fintan O’Toole, The Irish Times, 5 May 1994.

Which is why I've been known to say, with Ursula LeGuin, that I'm as politically correct as I know how to be, and have no plans to ever stop.
