The scientists aboard the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Amundsen have been spending the winter in the Amundsen Gulf near Banks Island in the Northwest Territories. Their $40 million study is looking at areas of open water in the sea ice called flaw leads. They hope that will help them understand what will happen as the Earth warms and more and more ice melts in the Arctic. CBCNews.ca reporter Emily Chung collected these images while aboard the Amundsen from March 6-14, 2008. She was one of 15 journalists sponsored by the World Federation of Science Journalists to report on the study.

I am participating because, although I am agnostic-to-dubious about its potential to create change, I don't break strikes, boycotts, or other actions called by people whose goals I support without a very very good reason. Anti-Semitism would be a very very good reason if Jewish ljers were calling for it to be broken on that basis. They are not. I therefore assume I can best respect them and support their position by going ahead.
