Someone -- ajhalluk? -- was talking recently about how lack of knowledge of literary tropes can, if pushed too far, render characters supiciously over-naive.

On which note, I have of late, I know not why, been compelled to sing the most excellent advice, presented in song form, of one Duane Elms during the commercials while watching Dr Who:

Chuck Cadman has died.

He looked desperately fragile at the vote in May; fragile, thin as a rail, but still smiling, still game, still in there.

Rest well, Mr Cadman. Whatever I sometimes thought of the stands you took, you were always the Honourable Member for Surrey North, in truth as well as in courtesy.
