Basically, you weigh your cat (Sunset is down to 8 lb at the moment; this is a concern but hopefully the correct thyroid meds dose plus treating the bladder infection and the bloody HEAD COLD will address it) and calculate thusly:

If you had all the money you have spent on a given cat and wanted a lifesize statue, what metal could you get it done in?

As of tonight, Sunset is roughly an 18 karat kitty.

On the other hand, between subcutaneous fluids and having her nose and sinuses cleaned out (cats are obligate nose breathers, it turns out; if they can't breathe through their noses, they can't breathe) she is feeling *much* better already, and we have tweaked the thyroid meds and taken her off the Metacam because her liver is showing signs of stress, and she has antibiotics for the bladder infection, so the improvement should continue.

At 7 pm she was panting and limp. By 10 pm she was pigging out on fancy gooshy food and mostly back to her usual snarky self.

Money well spent, I say. But seriously, can cats SMELL cheques? The cheque that arrived TODAY for my last freelance job will, basically, just cover this.

Also the kitchen is now painted. Next, wallpaper.

ETA: sunset impossibly cute

Sunset, last spring. She's rather bonier than this at the moment, but no less generally unimpressed.

I dunno; I feel like a GOOD cat owner would have caught this sooner, but I ALWAYS feel that way, and Sunset is very good at hiding her problems.

Taking a cat one has accepted an obligation towards to the vet, when they need it and we can pay for it - which, an unexpected bite of roughly $750 all in hurts, don't get me wrong, but we HAVE it - , is just minimum decent cat ownee, in my books. We choose to have cats, we owe them a decent life and the care they need.

I don't know what your vet says, but my vet is full of stories of cats who hid their ailments extremely well. She is a cat vet, that's all she does.
So when she tells me a story about a cat who had "a little" trouble going up the stairs one day, and the observant owners noticed and brought in kitty, saying, "I hope we're not wasting the vet's time on a little thing" and the cat was actually on his last day of life...

I think there is no such thing as "a GOOD cat owner would have caught this sooner."

I'm sorry to hear Sunset is having health problems and I'm glad they seem to be treatable and she is feeling better.

Almost every cat I know is good at hiding hir problems. It's part of being a solitary predator.

And yeah, vet bills are awful. Worse is losing the cat, IMHO.

They do seem to have that in common with cars, don't they?

This is why we use VrtuCar. Sadly, there is no cat-sharing service available locally.

Perhaps if there's enough demand. :) They have Toronto on their list of Maybe Cities.

Now, that looks like a comfortable and peaceful kitty. Feeling better, is she? Scritches and kitty kisses and good wishes for her recovery.

Such a pretty kitty! Glad to hear she's feeling better now. Agreed that it can be expensive, but so glad you had the money you needed at the time.

Is my math wonky or did you really mean about 120000 or I am just being a completely silly pedant or oh dear has your kitty had a hard time? Glad she is on the mend (and I wish I could shut off my math brain sometimes)
