The more I do towards making my hip better, the worse my knee gets. There's an impressive temperature difference between my two legs atm, too.

I mean, I know precisely what's wrong: I do any exercise at all and the swelling of the bursae starts causing restricted circulation and nerve impingement and also displacing the tops of several things which terminate at the knee just enough to cause trouble at the bottom.

Not exercising, however, makes me crazy, does nothing to fix the various imbalances that are causing this whole problem, and leaves me unfit and therefore both unhappy and more vulnerable to additional trouble.

The cortisone shots appointment can't happen soon enough. And I have just been persuaded to buy the GOOD (read: $75) kneepads for skating in.

Because 1) That's ouchy but also less than the cost of two physio appointments.

And 2) I had managed to forget between my high school days and now just how badly I cope with knee pain.

This sounds horrible. I am about the farthest possible from an excercise expert but - perhaps swimming would exercise your hip without putting stress on the knee?

It does, yes. The fundamental problem is, alas, that both the injury to the hip and the actual process of things in the hip shifting about as the problem rights itself are causing knee trouble.

It's all just an interconnected hot mess. :(

Have you looked into Alexander Technique and/or Feldenkrais Method? They're ways of accessing your kinesthetic sense so that you more more efficiently/less injuriously. There may be something subtle and unnecessary that you do when you exercise which is hurting your knee.

This is kind of why even though i know how kindly it's meant I kind of hate internet advice. I have complex physical issues which intersect, and there is always going to be a pile missing from any post I make.

Basically, there was something injurious I was doing that bitched my hip. What is happening now *is* the fix, except my right leg is too bitched to tolerate it within the pain relief I can safely use.

I know exactly what's wrong with my knee; it's 3/4 referred pain from the hip and the rest is pain from fixing my stance and the resulting new strains on the ligaments.

Fundamentally, nothing is going to help, or rather none of what helps can work or will be until we get the bursal inflammation down and that 3/4s gone, because they're impinging on every major structure on the outsides of my legs.

Argh, yes, the interconnectedness of leg bits is awfully frustrating sometimes.

Stupid hips. ::frowns at hips worldwide::

I have been having the exercising hurts, not exercising makes me crazy thing lately here. It's getting better! The trend is good! I am still all cabin-fevered.

*nods* I know this impatience. "Normal" physiotherapists have a reputation for pushing people do do painful exercises, but I tend to go to sports physiotherapists, who generally have to hold their charges back from doing more of the exercises than they should too soon, because athletes want to be training again now!
